Juan’s San Jose Getaway

My First Trip to San José, Costa Rica

As a 60-year-old single traveler from Miami, Florida, I finally decided to take my first trip to Costa Rica—and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable vacations I’ve ever experienced. I based myself in the country’s capital, San José, to get a true feel for the heart of Costa Rican culture. I stayed at a beautiful Airbnb called Av6 Residences San Jose, which was an excellent home base. The building was modern, secure, and ideally located near downtown, giving me easy access to everything from museums and parks to restaurants and nightlife. The host was friendly and helpful, offering great suggestions for things to do and places to explore in the city. The apartment itself was spotless, well-furnished, and comfortable—a perfect blend of convenience and style.

San José immediately impressed me with its charm, vibrancy, and warmth. The city is a fascinating mix of modern energy and traditional character, with bustling streets, historic architecture, and friendly locals who seem genuinely happy to welcome visitors. One of my first adventures was visiting the famous Jade Museum, which showcases an incredible collection of pre-Columbian jade artifacts. It gave me a real appreciation for Costa Rica’s ancient history and craftsmanship. From there, I spent an afternoon at Parque La Sabana, a massive green oasis right in the heart of the city often referred to as the “Central Park” of Costa Rica. Locals were out jogging, playing soccer, and spending time with family—it was a great place to people-watch and soak in the atmosphere. The combination of city buzz and natural beauty gave San José a unique balance that I really enjoyed.

One of the best parts of my trip was exploring the culinary and social scene in Barrio Escalante, the city’s trendiest neighborhood for dining and nightlife. This area is filled with boutique restaurants, craft beer bars, and cozy cafes, each offering a distinct experience. I enjoyed everything from Costa Rican-style casados and seafood dishes to international cuisines. The area comes alive in the evenings, with live music, friendly locals, and a social energy that’s hard to resist. Over a few nights there, I met both locals and travelers, all eager to share their favorite spots or swap stories about their experiences in Costa Rica. The food, drinks, and overall vibe of Barrio Escalante made it a must-visit for anyone coming to San José. The people’s warmth and easygoing nature made me feel welcome everywhere I went.

As much as I enjoyed the culture and cuisine, I also wanted to experience the nightlife and entertainment scene that San José is known for. I visited several dance clubs and casinos in the downtown area, each with its own character and energy. The casinos were elegant yet fun, and the dance clubs were alive with music ranging from salsa and reggaeton to electronic beats. It didn’t take long for me to find myself out on the dance floor enjoying the rhythm of the night. I met some wonderful lady friends while I was out—each kind, lively, and full of that Costa Rican charm. Everyone I encountered in the city was friendly and respectful, which made going out as a solo traveler both fun and comfortable. The nightlife in San José is vibrant but also laid-back enough to suit any mood, whether you want to dance until dawn or just relax with a drink and good company.

Looking back, my stay at Av6 Residences San Jose was the perfect choice for this kind of trip. It allowed me to enjoy both the calm of a comfortable apartment and the excitement of a city filled with things to do. Between the Jade Museum, Parque La Sabana, the incredible food in Barrio Escalante, and the lively casinos and clubs downtown, my days and nights were full of adventure. The city offered a perfect introduction to Costa Rica—welcoming, modern, and full of character. I left San José with countless memories, new friends, and a genuine appreciation for Costa Rican culture. It’s a destination that’s ideal for solo travelers like me who enjoy exploring, meeting new people, and experiencing a little bit of everything. Pura Vida, as they say here—it truly captures the spirit of this amazing country and its wonderful people.
